Jardiance: Uses – Side Effects – Warnings

Jardiance is a prescription medication used to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients. It’s the brand name for empagliflozin, an oral antidiabetic agent that inhibits glucose reabsorption in the kidneys and increases its excretion via urine. Jardiance is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Here’s what you should know about Jardiance uses, benefits, side effects, and warnings.

Uses

Jardiance is used to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, in combination with diet and exercise. It’s usually prescribed when metformin is not sufficient or not tolerated, or in addition to other antidiabetic medications. Jardiance works by blocking the protein SGLT-2, which is responsible for reabsorbing glucose back into the blood in the kidneys. By inhibiting SGLT-2, Jardiance promotes the excretion of glucose in urine and reduces its concentration in the blood. This mechanism also leads to modest weight loss and blood pressure reduction, which are additional benefits for diabetic patients.

Benefits

In addition to controlling blood sugar levels, Jardiance has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2015 found that Jardiance reduced the risk of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke in high-risk patients by 14%. Another study published in 2016 showed that Jardiance also reduced the risk of hospitalization for heart failure by 35%, compared to a placebo. These benefits are likely due to Jardiance’s ability to improve the heart’s energy metabolism and reduce inflammation.

Side Effects

Like any medication, Jardiance can cause side effects, some of which can be serious and require medical attention. Common side effects of Jardiance include:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Genital yeast infections
  • Thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Kidney problems

Some of these side effects, such as urinary tract infections or genital yeast infections, are more common in women than men. Jardiance can also increase the risk of bone fractures, especially in patients with a history of fractures or low bone density. Rare but serious side effects of Jardiance include ketoacidosis, a condition of high levels of ketones in the blood that can be life-threatening; acute kidney injury; severe hypersensitivity reactions; and genital gangrene (necrotizing fasciitis). If you experience any of these symptoms while taking Jardiance, seek immediate medical attention.

Warnings

Jardiance should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, as it can increase the risk of ketoacidosis. Jardiance can also cause dehydration and hypotension, especially in older adults or patients with kidney problems or heart failure. Before taking Jardiance, inform your healthcare provider if you have kidney problems, liver problems, or a history of urinary tract or genital infections. Jardiance may interact with other medications, such as diuretics, insulin, sulfonylureas, or rifampin. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and read the medication guide provided with Jardiance.
