Praluent: Uses – Side Effects – Warnings

Praluent is a medication used to treat high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in adults. It is a brand name for alirocumab, which belongs to a class of drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors. PCSK9 inhibitors work by preventing the breakdown of LDL receptors in the liver, which leads to increased removal of LDL cholesterol from the blood.

Uses:

Praluent is indicated as an adjunct therapy to diet and maximally tolerated statin therapy in adults with HeFH (heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) or ASCVD (atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease) who require additional low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction.

Benefits:

By reducing the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood, Praluent can help lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Clinical studies have shown that Praluent can reduce LDL cholesterol levels by up to 60%, making it a highly effective medication for people with high LDL cholesterol levels.

Side Effects:

Like all medications, Praluent does have some side effects that you should be aware of. The most common side effects of Praluent include:

– Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and throat)
– Injection site reactions (redness, itching, swelling, pain)
– Influenza-like symptoms (fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches)

Warnings:

Before taking Praluent, it is important to talk to your doctor about your medical history and any other medications you are taking. Praluent may not be safe for people with certain medical conditions or who are taking certain medications.

Some of the warnings associated with Praluent include:

– Hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylaxis)
– Neurocognitive events (such as confusion, memory impairment)
– Hepatitis or hepatic impairment
– Injection site reactions
– Pregnancy (because of the potential risk to the fetus)

If you experience any of these symptoms or have any concerns about taking Praluent, talk to your doctor right away.
