Xtandi: Uses – Side Effects – Warnings

Xtandi, also known as enzalutamide, is a prescription medication used to treat advanced prostate cancer. It belongs to a class of drugs called androgen receptor inhibitors. Xtandi works by blocking the androgen receptor – a protein that plays a key role in the growth and development of prostate cancer cells.

Uses

Xtandi is primarily used to treat advanced prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body – a condition known as metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). It is given to patients whose cancer has progressed despite hormonal therapy.

Additionally, Xtandi can also be used in combination with other medications, such as androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) or chemotherapy, to treat mCRPC. In some cases, it may also be used to treat non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Benefits

Clinical trials have shown that Xtandi can help slow down the progression of prostate cancer in patients with mCRPC. In fact, a phase III clinical trial showed that patients receiving Xtandi lived longer than those receiving a placebo. Additionally, Xtandi can help reduce the size of prostate cancer tumors and lower the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) – a protein produced by the prostate gland that is often elevated in men with prostate cancer.

Side Effects

Like most medications, Xtandi can cause side effects. Some common side effects of Xtandi may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Back Pain
  • Hypertension
  • Diarrhea
  • Hot flashes
  • Nausea
  • Decreased appetite

These side effects are usually mild to moderate in severity and may improve over time as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if you experience any severe side effects or any of the following symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling in the legs or feet
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Severe headache or dizziness
  • Seizures

Warnings

Before taking Xtandi, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of any medical conditions you have, any medications you are currently taking, and any allergies you have.

Xtandi may interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners and anti-seizure medications, and may cause serious side effects. Additionally, Xtandi may harm an unborn baby and should not be used by women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

It is also important to note that Xtandi may increase the risk of falls, so use caution when performing activities that require mental alertness or coordination.
